The author of this website, Dr Martijn Veltkamp (1977), is structural engineer interested in stretching the boundaries of structural and technical possibilities. He did so in his PhD research Free Form Structural Design (2007, read the summary), and he continues doing so in his current position at the structural engineering consultancy Adams Kara Taylor.

Dr Martijn Veltkamp holds a master degree in Civil Engineering, obtained in 2001 at Delft University of Technology. As part of his degree he spent an extended period at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chauss?es in Paris. His MSc degree was awarded with the qualification cum laude (with credit).

His doctoral research Free Form Structural Design was conducted within the chair of Product Development at the faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology. It dealt with the structural design of irregularly shaped, Free Form building designs. Since these structures cannot be composed out of conventional members, the research proposed alternative methods of construction, in which digital design methods are linked to detailing, structural analysis and computer controlled fabrication by using parametric modelling. The research project was supervised by professor Mick Eekhout and Dr Karel Vollers. The thesis was succesfully defended in September 2007 and was awarded with the qualification cum laude.

At the faculty of Architecture, Martijn Veltkamp has been a consultant for graduate students, taught in master courses, and co-initiated the sub-Working Group Free Form Design, part of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS).

In parallel to his doctoral research Veltkamp worked as structural engineer at Octatube Space Structures, a 'design + build' company in the field of structural glazing and complex spatial structures.

Martijn Veltkamp is currently working as a structural analyst at Adams Kara Taylor, London (UK), on projects featuring irregular shapes designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Thomas Heatherwick Studio and others.
